The Mary MacKillop Canonisation Appeal was launched recently to raise money for expenses relating to the upcoming canonisation of the order’s foundress, and Sr Sheila said the response has been positive.
“THIS appeal is a way to coordinate everyone’s support and desire to contribute and to be part of the process,” says Sr Sheila McCreanor, secretary general of the congregational leadership team for the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart.
“Many, many people have contacted us asking how they might be able to assist, asking how they might be able to contribute,” she said. The Sisters of St Joseph have already incurred substantial costs relating to the canonization process. Money raised will be allocated to canonisation celebrations here and in Rome, from travel expenses to the printing and distribution of information kits for schools and parishes.
“There are a number of costs associated with hosting events in Rome and around the country for
the many pilgrims and supporters of the Sisters and Mary MacKillop,” Sr Sheila said. “It was suggested that a national appeal be held within the broader Church as a means of directing the contributions of those wishing to assist to a concrete need, and enabling
people to be part of this historic
experience.
Supporters of the appeal will be remembered in perpetuity at a Mass held on the Feast Day
celebrated at Mount St, North Sydney, the place of her tomb. Mary MacKillop will be
canonised on October 17, 2010. The canonisation of Mary of the Cross, as she was known, is a milestone in Australia’s history, one of celebration for the Church and the nation.
More than 5000 Australians are expected to travel to Rome for the ceremony, from the
Josephites, other religious orders, Church officials, schools and pilgrims. Those celebrating
here in Australia will be able to watch coverage of the ceremony via telecast or web-streaming.
Sr Anne Derwin, congregational leader of the Sisters of St Joseph, is humbled by the number of people who want to take part in the celebrations.
“We want as many people as possible to take part in the events celebrating Mary’s canonisation,”
she said. “This is an opportunity for us to mark this unique event and historic occasion and to
honour Mary MacKillop.
